Many of you are thinking of living part time in Mexico and part time in the States/Canada. If the three months before we moved is a good indicator I wish you luck!! I am not sure I could live like that on a permanent basis! It just won't work for me. But perhaps you all who plan on multiple houses are used to it. We bought our home in Ajijic in August, 2001.During the preparation for the move in July, 2002 we researched carefully the MAXIMUM number and weight/size of suitcases that Continental Airlines allows for two people per trip. We borrow from relatives, a couple of huge suitcases and every time we fly down we take: two huge suitcases each, plus one carry on and one large handbag/duffel each. We have taken china, pots and pans, linens, glasses. More stuff than you can ever imagine jamming in a suitcase. Of course we did not often take a large selection of clothing! I'm sure our friends there understood, when I wore the same outfit on alternate days! The upside is we transported a quite a bit of "stuff" that way and we didn't have to pay to have it moved in July. Now the weight limits have dropped from 70 pounds a bag to 50!! so this is a much tougher option! The downside is I would go looking for a piece of clothing, a kitchen utensil, a vase or something and I not be able to find it! Is it packed in a box, has it already gone, is it in a suitcase for the next trip? I was never really sure which one of those choices was the answer. All I really knew was I couldn't find/use whatever it was I was looking for. This will be a constant conundrum for those of you who expect to keep two homes ;-) Your only other choice is to buy two of a lot of things. Trying to keep track of the logistics of such a thing would drive my anal retentive self nuts! I must admit I was really glad when all the "stuff" got there and was in one place. |
